Leaders’ appeals for calm went unnoticed on Saturday as violence erupted in loyalist parts of Northern Ireland for yet another successive night, amid anger over Brexit and the policing of a formerly senior IRA figure’s funeral.

Three cars were hijacked and set alight in Newtownabbey, on the northern outskirts of Belfast, with the burning shells of vehicles pictured blocking the road at the Cloughfern roundabout, where a crowd gathered.

Police reportedly closed off the surrounding roads before moving in on the roundabout, where footage publicised by the Police Federation for Northern Ireland showed masked men running over to throw petrol bombs and other projectiles at an armoured police van from close range, and punching and kicking the vehicle.

It came hours after Stormont’s first minister, Arlene Foster, and the Northern Ireland secretary, Brandon Lewis, called for an end to the violence, after police said a riot involving up to 300 people at the unionist Sandy Row area in south Belfast left 15 officers injured.

Scuffles in London as thousands join 'kill the bill' rallies across Britain

LONDON (Reuters) -Thousands of demonstrators joined rallies across Britain on Saturday against a proposed law that would give police extra powers to curb protests, with some scuffles breaking out following a march in London.

The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill aims to toughen measures officers can take to disperse demonstrations, such as imposing time and noise limits, which campaigners and activists fear would be used to curb dissent.

“Kill the bill” marches were held in dozens of towns and cities, supported by big campaign groups such as climate change campaigners Extinction Rebellion and the Black Lives Matter movement. Nearly all passed off peacefully but there were minor clashes in central London between protesters and police following a rally attended by several thousand people.

“The policing operation in central London has now moved to the enforcement stage and arrests are being made,” said London’s Metropolitan Police on Twitter. The force deployed a large number of officers in the capital to bring the protest to an end.

DOT halts Texas highway project in test of Biden's promises on race

President Joe Biden's Department of Transportation is invoking the Civil Rights Act to pause a highway project near Houston, a rare move that offers an early test of the administration's willingness to wield federal power to address a long history of government-driven racial inequities.

DOT's intervention follows complaints from local activists that the state's proposed widening of Interstate 45 would displace an overwhelmingly Black and Hispanic community, including schools, places of worship and more than 1,000 homes and businesses.

It also comes as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has identified racial equity as a major priority for his department — after decades in which federal highway money has paid for projects that leveled minority and low-income communities.

"I think this project is the poster child for [the administration's] policies," said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat representing the Houston area, who has joined local officials in challenging the project.
